A chance to play - a programme for and with children

The programme "A Chance to Play" aims to improve the lives of disadvantaged children and youth by linking opportunities for playing and sport with learning and training initiatives. It thereby makes an important contribution to allowing boys and girls to enjoy growing up, and to learn to hold their own: on the sports ground and in the game of life.

“A Chance to Play” promotes play as an essential component for the holistic development of a child, thereby emphasizing a basic right enshrined in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (article 31).

“A Chance to Play” has been made possible through the financial assistance of the Volkswagen Group Works Council and international child rights organization terre des hommes Germany, which coordinates the implementation process. Projects on the ground are realised through local non-governmental organisations focussing on children and development.

Originally started in South Africa in 2008 to create sporting and recreational development for children in several provinces the initiative now extends to other countries where organisations seek to make children’s right to play a reality.
